NINO is a network management solution to manage routers, switches, servers and applications. Using realtime monitoring, event monitoring and reporting the health and status of your network can be monitored. On high severity events NINO can send e-mail notification. NINO can be used from any place in the network or event the internet just using a web browser. This is an example to manage servers and the network.

Device view

NINO can manage all SNMP and WMI capable devices. The devices are displayed in a general way, as semi 19'' devices with the status of all physical and logical interfaces. NINO can show information per device:

  • General device information
  • Interface information, like errors, speed etc.
  • Routing tables
  • MAC address tables
  • Realtime monitoring

Hostmeter

NINO uses SNMP and WMI to monitor systems and applications. The most important system statistics, such as CPU load, memory, storage and processes can be monitored and viewed in graphs. Hostmeter can display this statistics in one dashboard view using meters and bars. Customized monitoring presets can be realized using the MIB browser or WMI browser.

Server processes can be monitored with NINO. Alarms are displayed in the eventlog if a process is down and in Hostmeter all relevant processes are displayed.

Status & Events

NINO can receive SNMP traps and store them into the eventlog database. Automated recovery using an event correlation table is also available. Event actions can be defined on high severity events, such as e-mail notification on a site down event. Also commandline or trap forwarding actions can be defined. For integration into larger networks traps can also be forwarded using source filters (ie. forward all traps coming from 10.1.1.*). The events can be used for reporting and realtime status view. The event function can filter out events in many ways, filtered by severity, category or search string. Also an event summary and SQL query function is available.

The status of your network can be monitored in a the category status window. This function will extract all severity info from the eventlog and categorize it. This is an easy way to get a quick overview. Categories can be customized.

Reporting

The report functions are based on HTML and can be generated by NINO any time you want. Using HTML templates, it is possible to create your own customized reports. NINO has embedded inline Perl functions to display network traffic, eventlog, userlog and device availability in a report. It is also possible to use auto-report functions. Every day or every month a report can be generated using your own customized HTML template.

NINO features

Device & network discovery:

  • Network discovery: NINO is able to discover your network. Just enter a router IP address or default gateway and an optional alternate community string, and NINO will scan all devices and store it in the database. NINO uses the routing table of each router to scan the network.
  • Scan IP range: NINO is able to scan your network for SNMP capable devices. Just enter a range, start IP address, end IP address and an optional alternate community string, and NINO will scan all devices and store it in the database.
  • Discover devices using seed file: NINO is able to discover your network using a seed file. Just upload the file and NINO starts discovering and store it in the database.
  • Discover monitoring capabilities: NINO is able to discover monitoring capabilities. NINO will detect a Cisco router or switch, Windows, Linux, Novell or generic host and enable the right monitoring presets.
  • Network info: NINO is also able to look inside a router, find routing tables and scan all attached networks. All network info per device will be stored into the database. In the device view also the current routing table can be displayed, showing routing protocol, age, next hop, metric etc.

Monitoring:

  • Monitoring: NINO can monitor servers, routers, switches and applications.
  • Events: NINO can send and receive SNMP traps. Traps are stored in the eventlog. Event actions can be defined to send e-mail alerts, escalation traps or commandline scripts. NINO also has a trap forwarding functionality to integrate NINO into larger networks. Traps can be forwared per event or using source filters (ie. forward all traps comming form: 10.1.1.* ).
  • Monitoring presets & preset groups: NINO uses monitoring presets to monitor devices. Presets can be stored in a preset group, ie. all Windows presets (CPU, Disk, memory, network statistics) are grouped in a Windows preset group. Monitoring presets can use SNMP, WMI or Service Response to monitor a device. It is possible to create customized monitoring presets. Default presets are available for Cisco routers or switches, Windows, Linux and hosts using the standard HostResources MIB.
  • Hostmeter: Hostmeter is a plugin that shows statistics in one screen. Hostmeter will show CPU, memory, storage, network and server processes. Server processes can be monitored and also alerts can be send to the eventlog if a process is down.

Device browser:

  • Device browser: A device browser is available to browse groups, devices, view hostmeter, view severity levels and browse monitoring statistics. Severity levels are also displayed for a group, this means that the highest severity for a device in that group will be displayed.
  • Groups: Devices can be grouped into device groups. The groups can be browsed in the device browser. This way it is easy to create a view by location or functionality. Groups may also contain groups to create higher level service views.
  • Reporting: Groups can also be created for reporting. These groups contain more information, such as host, monitoring preset and monitoring index. The device browser will also display these groups.

Tools:

  • MIB Browser: NINO can import MIB files and store them into the database. The MIB browser makes it easy to browse SNMP MIBs and create monitoring presets. The MIB search function will search strings in the MIB description fields and display all results in the browser.
  • snmpwalk: Using a web GUI it is possible to run a snmpwalk.
  • Send SNMP trap: It is possible to send SNMP traps to test event OIDs.
  • Service Response: Service Response is a performance measurement tool to monitor the performance of web servers, HTTP, FTP, SMTP, POP3 or other TCP services.
  • Find Host: What do you do when you've lost a PC or printer in your administration ? One way is to let NINO search for it ! NINO can look in the MAC Address table of switches. Using DNS and the default gateway, the IP address or hostname can be found corresponding to the MAC address. Just enter a IP range with switch IP addresses, and NINO will find all interfaces communicating with your lost host.

NINO Administration & Diagnostics:

  • Diagnostics: Test MySQL connectivity and set NINO logging level: Info, Warning, Error, Debug, Performance. In the nino.log the NINO script, function, level, description and optional performance response (in ms) is logged. Also SQL queries and performance is logged when the Performance logging is switched on.
  • Mail: Test tool to send mail using SMTP.
  • FileManager: Download or view, delete or upload files.
  • Database: Browse SQL table content and edit rows. The import/export utility can be used to import/export SQL tables from/to a tab delimited file.
  • NINO Security: Setup Apache & NINO security. Manage users and groups and set permissions for NINO functional groups. This tool is web-based and uses the standard Apache htpasswd tool.
  • Severity: Setup severity levels, colors and alert sounds.
  • Configuration: Setup NINO configuration, set SNMP community strings, configure windows admin user account for WMI, maximum logfile size, name lookup ON/OFF etc.
  • Skins: select skin to change NINO look & feel. This is a variety of a classic wood style GUI to a modern Startrek GUI.
  • Import: Import preset files, configuration or secuirity templates using a ini-file.
